Vineyard
Patrick and Shelley Eckel, along with their children Amelie and Theo are the current custodians of the Cold Acre Vineyard and responsible for the viticulture and vinification of the wines.
Purchasing the property in 2019 is a continuation of their journey in wine that started with their first vintage in 2010.
There is a focus on classic French varieties of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with both viticulture and winemaking focusing on as little intervention as possible to showcase our unique site.
Cold Acre Estate Vineyard
The vineyard is on the north facing slope of Mt Jim Jim which is an extinct volcano located in the township of Newham, within the Macedon Ranges. The site sits at an elevation of 580m, with this elevation combining with its north facing slope making it a wonderful site to craft Pinot and Chardonnay in the cool climate of the Ranges.
The vineyard was first planted in 2006 to Viognier, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay, with the Viognier and Pinot Gris grafted to Pinot Noir in 2021 along with additional plantings of Pinot Noir. Work has commenced on an additional 12 acres of vines (Pinot Noir and Chardonnay) with planting to take place in 2023.
In addition to Cold Acre we have a close planted vineyard in Woodend, Macedon Ranges that is planted to Pinot Noir and used to make our sparkling rose.
Whilst our new plantings are established at Cold Acre we have the opportunity to work with a couple of wonderful cool climate sites in Longview Creek Vineyard, and Mount Charlie Vineyard to craft single vineyard expressions that follow the same winemaking approach and technique to those produced from Cold Acre Vineyard.
